History
USS Indiana
Spanish American War:
- 05/12/1898, Indiana, operating with the North Atlantic Squadron, is ordered to the port of San Juan in an attempt to intercept a Spanish squadron sailing to the Caribbean from Spain under the command of Admiral Cervera. On 12 May 1898, with the harbor being devoid of Spanish ships, the North Atlantic Squadron decided to bombarded the harbor and its defenses. Indiana and the rest of the North Atlantic Squadron then returned to Key West, where they would receive news 3 weeks later that Cervera's fleet had been found and was currently being blockaded in Santiago de Cuba.
- 07/01/1898, Indiana leads a transport fleet that lands an expeditionary force east of Santiago de Cuba which attacks the city on 1 July 1898.
- 07/03/1898, With the expeditionary force closing in on land Admiral Cervera saw that his situation was desperate and on 3 July 1898 attempted to break the blockade. Indiana occupied the extreme eastern position of the blockade and fired on the Spanish crusiers Infanta Maria Teresa and Almirante Oquendo as they exited the harbor, but, due to engine problems, could not pursue the Spanish crusiers as they attempted to escape to the West. Shortly after, the Spanish destroyers Pluton and Furor exited the harbor, and Indiana, along with USS Iowa, assisted the gunboat USS Gloucester in the sinking of the 2 Spanish ships. Indiana was then assigned to resume the blockade of the harbor in the event that further Spanish ships attempted to escape and thus she did not participate in the chase and destruction of the remaining Spanish crusiers, Vizcaya and Cristobal Colon.
Post Spanish American War:
- 01/1907, Indiana provides relife to Kingston, Jamaica, after the Kingston earthquake of 1907.
